Xanthates have a wide range of applications, mainly covering the following aspects:
Xanthates are the most commonly used collectors in sulfide ore flotation, and are particularly suitable for the flotation of sulfide ores such as copper sulfide ores, lead-zinc sulfide ores, and pyrite. Through the chemical adsorption between their xanthate groups and metal ions on the mineral surface, the mineral surface becomes hydrophobic, thereby enabling it to combine with air bubbles and float upward. For example, isobutyl xanthate (IBX) is the most widely used collector for sulfide ores, which can effectively improve the recovery rate of metals such as copper, lead, and zinc.
Xanthates can act as adsorbents and precipitants for heavy metal ions, and are used to treat wastewater containing heavy metals such as copper, nickel, and cobalt. For instance, ethyl xanthate can be used to precipitate cobalt ions in the leachate of zinc smelting slag, and heavy metals are removed by forming insoluble xanthate precipitates.
Xanthate compounds are vulcanization accelerators for rubber, such as zinc n-butyl xanthate (ZBX) and zinc isopropyl xanthate (ZIP). They feature low-temperature vulcanization and fast vulcanization, and are suitable for the vulcanization of latexes like natural rubber, styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), and nitrile rubber (NBR). They are particularly widely used in fields such as latex dipped products and rubber cement.
Xanthates are important intermediates for the synthesis of compounds such as xanthate esters and thiocarbamates. These derivatives find applications in fields like flotation, medicine, and pesticides. For example, xanthate esters can be prepared by the reaction of xanthates with chlorinated hydrocarbons, acrylonitrile, etc., and thiocarbamate collectors can be obtained through further ammonolysis.
It should be noted that xanthates have properties such as flammability, easy decomposition, and an irritating odor in industrial applications. Appropriate safety protection measures must be taken during use.
